A pension statement that feels smaller than expected. A birthday that makes the next ten years feel shorter than the last ten. A sentence from a tax advisor, a bank advisor, or a friend: “You should check whether your retirement will really be enough.”

And then the question appears.

Not loudly. Not dramatically.

Just clearly.

How much longer do I really have to work?

For many people over 40, this is no longer an abstract question. It is a practical one. The children may be older. The business may be stable. The career may have reached a point where the next promotion no longer feels like freedom. And yet, when people look at their pension, savings, insurance contracts, property, and investments, the full picture often feels strangely unclear.

• They may have money. • They may have products. • They may even have advisors. • But they do not yet have clarity. • That is where the retirement gap begins.

Not only in the numbers, but in the missing structure.

The retirement gap is not just a pension problem

When people hear the words “retirement gap,” they often think only of the difference between their future state pension and their monthly living costs.

That gap matters, of course.

But for many people, the deeper problem is not only the size of the pension. It is that they do not know how all the pieces of their financial life work together.

One contract pays later. One account is liquid but losing purchasing power. One property has value but does not pay the bills. One investment looks promising but is not fully understood. One pension statement arrives every year, but nobody has translated it into a calm monthly reality.

The result is a familiar feeling:

“I have something. But I do not know whether it is enough.”

That sentence is more common than most people admit.

It is also the reason why early retirement planning should not begin with a product. It should begin with a simple question:

What does each part of your wealth need to do for your life?

The mistake: asking “How much money do I need?” too early

“How much money do I need to retire early?” is a good question.

But it is not the first question.

Before you can answer it, you need to understand three things:

How much liquidity you need for flexibility and safety.

How your monthly costs will be covered when salary stops.

Which long-term assets should remain untouched for later years.

Without that structure, the number alone can mislead you.

One person may need a larger capital base because they have high monthly spending, no property, and limited pension income. Another person may need less because they already have reliable income streams, lower costs, and assets that can support them over time.

The important point is this:

Retirement is not only a number. Retirement is a cashflow structure.

You do not live from a spreadsheet total. You live from monthly clarity.

A calmer way to think: the three-spoke framework

At Best Ager Consulting, we use a simple educational model called the three-spoke framework.

Imagine a wheel.

A wheel needs more than one spoke to move steadily. If one spoke carries everything, the wheel becomes unstable. If one spoke is missing, the structure starts to wobble.

The same is true for wealth.

1. Liquidity

This is the money you can access quickly.

It is there for emergencies, opportunities, unexpected costs, travel, family needs, or simply peace of mind.

Liquidity usually does not create the highest return. That is not its job. Its job is availability.

The mistake many people make is either holding too little liquidity, which creates stress, or too much liquidity, which allows inflation to quietly reduce purchasing power over time.

Liquidity is not the whole plan.

It is the breathing space.

2. Planned consumption

This is the part of your structure that is meant to support your monthly life.

Rent or mortgage. Food. Insurance. Health. Travel. Family. Personal comfort. The real costs of living after work becomes optional.

This is where many people discover the gap.

They know what they earn today. They roughly know what they spend today. But they have never calmly written down what life after work would actually cost each month.

A retirement plan becomes real when you can answer this sentence:

“If my salary stopped, this is how my monthly life would be covered.”

3. Long-term real assets

This is the part of your wealth that is not meant to be touched every month.

It is there for long-term value, stability, inheritance, later-life flexibility, and protection against the quiet erosion of purchasing power.

Best Ager Consulting teaches clients to think in terms of real assets first, instruments second.

That does not mean every instrument is bad. It means the client should understand what sits behind the number.

A client should never own something they cannot explain in their own words.

Why “time” is the real goal

Many financial conversations focus on money as if money itself were the final destination.

It is not.

Money is useful because of what it can give back: time, choice, calm, dignity, movement, family, travel, and the possibility of deciding how much of your life still belongs to work.

For people in their 40s, 50s, and early 60s, this becomes especially important.

The question changes from:

“How can I make more?”

to:

“What is the money for?”

For some, the answer is to stop working earlier. For others, it is to reduce working hours. For others, it is to keep working, but without financial pressure. And for some, it is simply to understand what they already own before making any new decision.

There is no single answer.

There should not be.

The right structure depends on the life you want.

Why many people feel disappointed by financial conversations

Many people arrive at this stage with a quiet frustration.

They have spoken to banks. They have signed contracts. They have bought insurance products, pension products, funds, or other financial instruments. But years later, they still cannot explain clearly what they own, what it costs, when it pays, and what role it plays in their life.

That is not a small problem.

Understanding is not a luxury. It is the basis of every serious financial decision.

If someone cannot explain a product in plain language, they are not really making a decision. They are accepting hope.

And hope is not a structure.

This is why education must come before action.

Before any platform, provider, product, or strategy, there should be a calmer step:

What do you already own, and does it still fit the life you want?

The first exercise: write your “freedom number” differently

Most people write their freedom number as one big amount.

For example:

“I need one million.”

But that number alone does not explain anything.

A better exercise is to divide the question into four parts:

1. What does your life cost today?

Write the real monthly number, not the optimistic one.

Include housing, food, insurance, transport, family, health, tax, travel, repairs, support for children or parents, and the small things that never appear in pension calculators.

2. What would your life cost if work became optional?

Some costs may go down. Others may rise.

Travel may increase. Health costs may matter more. Time at home may change spending habits. Helping family may become more important.

3. What income is already expected?

State pension. Occupational pension. Existing contracts. Rental income. Business income. Other predictable inflows.

The point is not to judge them yet. The point is to see them clearly.

4. Where is the gap?

Only now does the real question appear:

How much monthly life is not yet covered?

That is the gap worth studying.

Early retirement should not feel like a sales conversation

A serious early-retirement conversation should not begin with pressure.

It should not begin with “sign here.”

It should not begin with a promise.

It should begin with a quiet review of what is already there.

At Best Ager Consulting, the work is educational and structural. We do not manage client funds. We do not provide investment advice. We do not make decisions for the client.

We help clients understand the principles, the structure, and the questions they should ask before they make their own decisions.

That distinction matters.

Because the goal is not dependency.

The goal is clarity.

What to do next

If you are over 35 and beginning to wonder whether your current structure can support the life you want, do not start by asking which product is best.

Start with these five questions:

What do I already own?

What does each part do?

What does it cost?

When does it become useful?

Does it bring me closer to Lebenszeit statt Arbeitszeit?

That last question is the most important one.

Because money is not the goal.

Time is.

And the earlier you understand the gap, the more calmly you can decide what to do next.

Start with a calm conversation

If you are 35+ and want to understand your retirement gap more clearly, the first step is not a product decision. It is a calm conversation.
